Avlemonas

Avlemonas is a picturesque, coastal village built on the east side of Kythera. One can be mesmerized by its unique beauty due to the small coves and emerald green, crystal clear waters. If you are into history, don’t miss Castelli, a tiny 16th century Venetian castle used as a watchtower during the Venetian period. Worth visiting the Cavallini Residence, locally known as “The House with the Sundial” due to the sundial placed above its main door, one of the most emblematic and historic buildings on the island.

Kaladi beach

Kaladi is, according to many, the most beautiful beach of Kythera. It is located on the eastern part of the island, very close to Palaiopolis. Crystal clear, turquoise waters and greyish pebbles, an enchanting rocky landscape and superb caves compose a stunning scenery. A dirt road and, approximately, 120 stone steps will take you down to it. There are no tourist facilities so, be prepared.

Useful tips

You can reach Kythera by plane or ferry. There is a ferry connection with the ports of Piraeus, Neapolis and Gythion in Peloponesse and Kastelli Kissamos in Chania region (Crete).

Avlemonas is located 5km from the port of Diakofti and 9 km. from the airport. Just 1,5 km. away you can reach Palaiopolis beach, the largest one on the island. According to legends, these are the waters where Aphrodite, the goddess of love, emerged.

Saint George

At the top of a hill, at an altitude of 350m, stands the chapel of St. George, one of the oldest Christian monuments of Kythera. Excavations on the site revealed the “Minoan Peak Sanctuary”, evidence of the Minoan presence on the island. The prehistoric shrine was succeeded by the St. George temple, constructed in the early 7th century AD. Nowadays, the only remnant of that thriving community of the Byzantine era is the preserved mosaic floor of the church.

Chytra

The islet Chytra, also known as Avgo, is a natural attraction of Kythera located at a short distance across the Kapsali port. On the craggy, inhospitable ground blooms the Sempre Viva, an indigenous yellow flower that symbolizes eternal love. On the south side, there is a sea cave with dazzling turquoise waters, an attraction not only for tourists but also for seals. If you are lucky enough you may come across with Mavropetritis, a protected species of falcons nesting on these steep cliffs.
